What to Do When Your Roof Is Leaking

When your roof is leaking, protect the interior first, avoid climbing onto a wet roof, document what you can safely see, and call a roofer who can diagnose the actual water path before permanent repair.

First steps inside the home

Move valuables away from the leak, place a bucket or towel, and relieve sagging wet drywall only if it can be done safely.

Take photos of interior stains, dripping water, and any visible exterior damage from the ground.

What not to do

Do not climb onto a wet, icy, steep, or storm-damaged roof. Do not smear roof cement everywhere before the leak path is diagnosed.

Temporary tarping can help, but only when roof access and weather conditions are safe.

Common questions

Should I call or fill out a form for an active leak?
Call first when water is actively entering. Forms are fine for non-emergency estimates and scheduled repair evaluations.
Can a leak be fixed the same day?
Sometimes, if conditions are safe and materials are available. Other leaks may need temporary protection before permanent repair.
